The calibration of all the controls is intuitive, so it's very satisfying at a less banzai pace. The steering is accurate, the acceleration smooth and prompt, and it manages its considerable weight with aplomb.

At any speed, noise is kept to an impressive minimum. There's hardly any electric motor whine, while wind and road noise are barely noticeable. In fact, the iX is one of the quietest cars we’ve ever tested.

The iX performs brilliantly against rivals for comfort, especially if it’s on air suspension. With it, the iX cushions you excellently over lumps and bumps – and it does so with a similar ease to the EX90 and better than an EQE SUV.

Fast charging on the road, though, was far more impressive. Of four DC fast-charger stops, three pulled between 135 and 160 kilowatts, the latter very close to its 195-kW maximum. None took more than 28 minutes to hit 80 percent.

In motion, the iX is highly responsive to driver input, the cabin is predictably quiet at higher speeds, and the overall drive experience is quite enjoyable.

The exterior door handles aren’t new, but deserve a shout-out because, to me, they are the best among all EVs. You don’t pull or push the handle. There are no exterior moving parts. The handle doesn’t pop out.

Let’s start with the good news. There are four levels of regenerative brake options in the 2026 BMW iX — low, medium, high, and adaptive. Some EVs have only “on” or “off,” so additional choice is always good.

A comfortable, satisfying and impossibly fast electric GT

Take the steering. It's direct and accurate, allowing you to place the car exactly where you want it on the road and feel some sense of the surface tingling your fingers.

In other words, the E-tron GT is an electric performance car. But it’s also worth noting that it shares a lot of its tech with the Porsche Taycan. And if you go for the range-topping version and engage launch control, it can accelerate as quickly as an F1 car. Yes, really.

Even the entry-level quattro version of the Audi E-tron GT is properly fast, so it’s the one we’d go for. It has two electric motors, giving it four-wheel drive and a total of 496bhp in normal driving.

That said, it initially builds speed comparatively gently so that it’s easy to drive the car smoothly in stop-start traffic. It’s only when you push the accelerator harder (or engage launch control, which ups power to 576bhp) that you’re pinned back hard in your seat.

The S and RS variants are even quicker, while at the top of the line-up you find the RS Performance, which packs 738bhp as standard and a colossal 912bhp when you engage launch control.

That’s enough to rocket you to 62mph from a standstill in just 2.5 seconds (i.e. F1 car pace). You’d need to go for the more expensive Porsche Taycan Turbo S to go even quicker.

The regenerative brakes of many electric cars are a bit of a pain; they replenish the battery with energy as you slow down, but can make it hard to judge how hard you need to press the brake pedal.

Four-wheel steering (introduced with Vorspring trim) gives the E-tron GT extra agility at slow speeds and greater stability on motorways.

No matter which version you go for, though, the E-tron GT is remarkably comfortable. Its standard air suspension does a fantastic job of keeping the car composed (and you comfortable) when you're cruising at high speeds.

Vorsprung versions of the RS E-tron GT also get an Active Air Suspension system, which almost entirely eliminates body lean, and reduces nosedive under braking. We tried it on a test track and it was very impressive.

There’s still a directness and precision to the e-tron GT’s steering that makes it easy to place the front end of the car through corners, though.

Performance in this flagship model is truly incredible. Traction and road-holding are equally spectacular, and even on a greasy road it’ll have your guests (and their lunch) pressed firmly against the soft Nappa leather sports seats.

What might even be more impressive than the outright performance, though, is how it’s metered out to the driver. There’s a natural and responsive feeling to the throttle and brakes that makes it feel intuitive, and not uncontrolled.

Regardless of its age, though, this is a superb cruiser, so on top of the impressive new range figures, the e-Tron GT is also one of the most comfortable cars on the road – so long as you tick the right option boxes. It’s also incredibly fast in its RS forms.

Given the name, you’d expect this to be a decent grand tourer, and Audi reckons on 386 miles of range for the base quattro, 374 miles in the S, 365 miles for the RS and 364 miles for the RS Performance. Just one mile for an extra 68bhp? Sounds good to us.

Charging speeds are up from the pre-facelift car too, with the 800-volt architecture allowing for 320kW DC rapid charging. If you can find a charger with enough power, that should mean a 10 to 80 per cent top up in just 18 minutes.

Shocking performance, silky handling, chiselled good looks

The RS previously topped the range with 637bhp, but now you get (hope you’re sitting down) 844bhp in the ‘standard’ RS and a whopping 912bhp in the RS Performance.

Bigger than before. Previously Audi offered a 93kWh battery in the e-tron, but it’s now grown to a 105kWh unit which still manages to be 9kg lighter. Nice.
