Top 7 Turnout Fly Sheets for Pasture Use in Canada — 2026 Picks
Turnout fly sheets for pasture use are lightweight, breathable protective covers designed to shield horses from flies, mosquitoes, midges and other biting insects while they graze or rest outdoors. In Canada, where summer insect pressure and variable weather conditions can cause discomfort, skin irritation, and stress for horses, these sheets are a practical seasonal essential. Owners choose turnout fly sheets for a mix of protection and comfort: high-quality mesh blocks bites without trapping heat, extended neck and belly coverage reduces exposed skin, durable weaves resist pasture wear, and design details like adjustable closures and tail flaps improve fit and stay-in-place performance. Canadian buyers tend to favor brands and models that balance robust construction for mixed pasture conditions with good ventilation for hotter days, plus features that simplify cleaning and storage for busy stables. Value is judged by a combination of fit, material quality, coverage option, UV protection, warranty and real-world durability in local climates.

What research and expert guidance say about turnout fly sheets
Scientific studies and equine-welfare guidance consistently show that physical barriers, such as mesh turnouts and full-neck designs, reduce insect bites and associated skin irritation, lower fly-related stress behaviors, and can help prevent secondary skin infections. Research on textiles and equine thermoregulation also indicates that properly ventilated mesh fabrics minimize heat retention compared with solid covers, maintaining horse comfort during warm weather. Evidence supports selecting durable, breathable materials and correct fit as the key factors that determine both protection and welfare benefits.
Barrier effect: Trials and field studies report fewer fly landings and bites on horses wearing well-fitting mesh sheets versus exposed horses, which reduces dermatitis and behavioral stress.
Thermoregulation: Breathable mesh fabrics allow airflow and evaporative cooling; studies measuring horse temperature and behavior show minimal heat load when mesh is correctly sized and ventilated.
Coverage matters: Full-neck and extended-belly options provide measurable reductions in exposed bite-prone areas compared with standard-neck designs.
Material and denier: Higher-quality weaves resist tearing and abrasion in pasture conditions; long-term use studies link better material integrity with longer service life and lower replacement costs.
Integrated repellents: Fabric treatments or sprayed insecticides (used as directed) can add protection but should be applied according to label guidance and combined with physical barriers for best results.
