Top 6 Sensitive Digestive Support Pellets for Rabbits, Guinea Pigs and Rodents in Canada - 2026
Sensitive Digestive Support Pellets are limited-ingredient, prebiotic- and probiotic-enhanced formulas designed for rabbits, guinea pigs and other small rodents that have digestive sensitivities. These species specific pellets prioritize highly digestible fiber sources such as timothy and other long-stem hays, minimize common irritants like added sugars, artificial colors and unnecessary grains, and include fibers and microbial support to help maintain a balanced gut microbiome. In Canada, demand has grown for these products because they reduce the risk of gastrointestinal upset, simplify ingredient lists for easier elimination of triggers, and combine targeted nutrition with good palatability. Canadian consumers also look for transparent sourcing, evidence-based gut support, vet-friendly formulations and seasonal availability that align with regional feeding advice, making sensitive digestive support pellets a practical category for owners seeking reliable, species-appropriate small pet food and treats.

What the Science Says About Digestive Support Pellets
Research and clinical guidance show that targeted dietary strategies can reduce digestive upset in small herbivores. Key mechanisms include providing digestible, high-fiber ingredients to support normal gut motility, using prebiotics to feed beneficial bacteria, and including select probiotic strains to help restore microbial balance after disturbance. Limited-ingredient recipes reduce exposure to potential dietary triggers and simplify elimination trials when identifying sensitivities. Veterinary research and practice reports also emphasize the importance of fiber quality and particle length for dental wear and intestinal health in rabbits and related species.
Prebiotics such as fructooligosaccharides and certain fibers support beneficial gut bacteria and fermentation, improving stool consistency and nutrient absorption.
Probiotics can help re-establish stable microbiota after stress, diet change or antibiotic use, lowering the risk of dysbiosis when used appropriately.
High-quality, long-stem fiber encourages natural chewing and gut motility; research and vet guidance link adequate fiber to reduced incidence of gastrointestinal stasis in rabbits.
Limited-ingredient formulas reduce the number of potential dietary allergens or irritants, making elimination and diagnosis easier for pet owners and veterinarians.
Extruded and heat-processed pellets are often more digestible and less dusty than mash or unprocessed mixes, improving palatability and reducing respiratory and gastrointestinal irritation.
